There are smart and dumb things you can do with money.
Last year, I was smart, I saved. This year has been off to a crappy start, and I've been dumb.
I had a grand plan to be cheap for Christmas presents, spend as little as possible and just be cautious with money as I knew in 2014 I was going to be a full time student.
My biggest fear was that something would happen, like an emergency, where I would need to give up my savings. Well, this did happen. I went to hospital for 9 days, the first 6 were tests, the doctors trying to figure out what was wrong, on the 7th day they removed my appendix, then they kept me in for another 2 days to make sure there were no complications.
That's 9 days I was unable to work, and what they did to me- they punctured my abdominal wall in 3 places, removed a piece of me and stitched me back up. The post surgery pain stuck around for 2-3 weeks (the worst of it in the first week), and I was just exhausted! I took 4 weeks off work, 5 weeks if you include the week in hospital. I only had a very small amount of sick leave they could give me. I was living off my savings, and it really didn't take me long to go through them.
It has now been a little over 2 months since the operation, and I have been back at work for 4 weeks. My full time course started last week, and I am loving it. I am only able to work 3 days a week, the other 4 days are for study. Since being back at work, I have not been making enough to get any savings back, partly because I have had bills to pay and partly because I've been dumb.
I am lost as to what to do. I know I need to stop buying needless things, I need to be grateful for what I have, and things I don't need anymore, try to sell them. I have been eating out a lot- living in a share-house, it can be hard to get some kitchen time to prepare a meal. I need to start having breakfast at home, making lunch for school or work, and making a big dinner (hoping there will be leftovers for lunch the next day).
Buying groceries and only eating the food in the house will be a great start to saving money, and selling off items of clothing or other possessions that I no longer need or use will bring in an extra income.
I have a couple big expenses coming up- bills, getting my car serviced and I really want to go to Melbourne in a couple of weeks. At the moment, looking at my budget, I can barely afford the bills. Going to Melbourne would be amazing. I would have so much fun. At the moment, it's not doable, hopefully in a weeks time I will be in a better position. I have listed some items on Ebay, and have some clothes and other things on Gumtree. Hopefully I can sell a few things and have some extra pocket money.
I'm not sure what else I can do.
My questions for you:
What's your best tip to saving money?
What do you do for a bit of extra cash?
