Australian Election! RESULTS ARE IN!

What does this mean?

Mr Tony Abott, leader of the Liberal party, won the Australian election. Labour is out, and Kevin Rudd seems a bit relieved about this, as the result was given, he stepped down from his position as leader of the Labour party.

I don't know what this means for Australia. What's going to happen now? How quickly will changes be made and how drastic are these changes going to be?

I don't quite understand politics, but I would really like to, so I will be off to do some research (after writing this, so I look silly now, but just you wait). I get that one person is the "leader" of the nation, but does that mean that they have the final decision on a proposal or do they create the proposal for other members of parliament to discuss?

I've heard a lot of bad about Mr Abott and I would like to hear some good. What good is he going to bring to Australia being the new Prime Minister? How am I, a 21 year old female who isn't sure of the direction she's heading, going to benefit from this man being the leader of the country?

The thing that I felt separated the two parties in my eyes was, Labour is about the people, the families, students and the general population, I feel that the Liberal Party are more about business people, high income earners, lawyers and such, and they don't really care for the smaller people trying to build their way up. I feel like the liberal party is just going to make to rules to keep the little people down and the bigger people up and rising.

I am not saying my opinion is right in any way, I want to like the current PM, I want to be happy for the nation and have something to hope for for our country. Let me know what you think.

I'm confused.
Thanks for reading!! Baii!! xx
